The Babadook is hands down one of the most frightening, psychologically disturbing films I’ve ever seen. This low-budget export from Australian writer/director Jennifer Kent pierces into dark territories of the human psyche that many films tend to avoid in order to deliver legitimate scares.
If you’re looking for a horror film full of blood, guts, and jump scares, The Babadook is not for you. Never once did I jump or avert my eyes from the screen, so if that’s your idea of a scary movie you’d best look somewhere else. What I did see was a horror film that stuck with me days later and continues to haunt my imagination.
I could go on, but it’s best to view this film unspoiled. Suffice to say, I’m giving The Babadook my highest recommendation.

I've decided to start doing some speed reviews. Jennifer Kent's The Babadook is a film that is best to review without giving away the plot, so I figured I'd let it be the first entry in a new series of Brisk Reviews.
